Mar 29, 2016  Unepic for PlayStation 4 game reviews & Metacritic score: Unepic is a combination of platforming and role playing games. There are many hilarious references throughout the game. The game takes place in Harnakon, a huge.

Gems With Friends is an all-new, fast-paced social puzzle game that is easy to learn and difficult to master! Gems with friends ipad.

By Review Date: March 8, 2015Much of Unepic is hit or miss. Sometimes combat is thrilling, challenging and rewarding. Other times it is frustrating or a chore.

Sometimes the comedy is delightful with plenty of pop nerd references like to Starcraft or Lord of the Rings. Too often, though, it falls back on crude poop or sex jokes. In the opening scenes of the game, the guy you play as is playing Dungeons & Dragons and is ridiculed by his friends for attempting to kill a skeleton with a bow and arrows. Once you find yourself in a real dungeon you discover that this logic still holds true in the game's combat.

Most enemies have varying strengths and weaknesses that you must learn and exploit to be successful. For a 2D Metroidvania/RPG hybrid these strategic elements are refreshing.

You are given enough skill points at each level to be able to specialize in a few areas and be passable in a few others. As long as you have some magical ability and ranged damage your chosen arsenal will allow you to succeed.Unfortunately there is a stiffness of motion pervading the game that reduces the appeal of both the battles and platforming. I couldn't shake the feeling that by and large, Unepic could have been made back in the SNES era. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy retro games, but I like it when they combine the best of new and old. This is a case of leaning too much on the old.Part of that stiffness can be attributed to the animations.

Every sword swing, every spell cast and every arrow fired will look exactly the same as the last one. Not only is there no visual variety, but the quality of what's there is poor too. Each region within the game looks unique. However, there's not nearly enough detail or artistic pizzazz to make them interesting. Quite frankly, Unepic is an ugly game. This is a game that likes to screw with you. It will trick you, spring traps on you and in general, punish you without mercy.

These types of scripted mischief are often comedic and kept me on my toes. I played the game on Hard and thought the difficulty was about right for roughly the first 2/3rds of the game. The final 1/3rd made me regret my choice as it crossed the line from a good challenge to frustratingly difficult. While I did not play it myself, there is a multiplayer mode with its own campaign that looks comically devious.I'll close with a few spoiler free comments on the story. I consider this one of the stronger aspects of the game.

There are some fresh ideas to be found here including some pointed satire and a break from the standard good versus evil tropes. You have a shadowy companion throughout most of the game that makes for an entertaining dialogue partner. Voice acting is exceptionally good, not just for an indie game but for video games in general.Play time: Approximately 22 hours.
